Eryn Oruncak, SIDC, ASID, Founder and Principal Designer of Elan Design, will present the opening keynote and continuing education program, “Neuroaesthetics in Interior Design,” at ASID New Jersey designXPO 2026.
The CEU explores how neuroaesthetics can help interior designers better understand the relationship between people and the environments they create, and how emerging research can be translated into more thoughtful, individualized design decisions.
Based in Great Falls, Virginia, Elan Design serves luxury residential clients throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, DC, and the surrounding region while bringing neuroaesthetic principles into residential interiors, fine art, and design consultation.

About the Keynote
Interior design has always considered aesthetics and function.
Neuroaesthetics adds another dimension:
How does the person living in the space actually experience it?
People are increasingly looking for design professionals who understand more than the project itself. They want to know that their designer understands how they live, what matters to them, how they move through their home and what they want their environment to support.
In this keynote, Eryn explores how neuroaesthetics can give interior designers a stronger framework for understanding those differences. The goal is not to design for an idealized client or an idealized room. It is to create environments aligned with the needs, preferences, routines and lived experiences of the people who actually occupy them.

What Attendees Will Explore
“Neuroaesthetics in Interior Design” is presented as a CEU for design professionals.
During the CEU, Eryn will introduce concepts including:

the relationship between neuroaesthetics and human-centered design;

how individual preferences and experiences shape responses to interiors;

key concepts from the brain, nervous system, and aesthetic experience;

how light, art, biophilia, color, and customized design can be considered through a neuroaesthetic lens;

practical ways designers can incorporate these ideas into the design process and client conversations.
Eryn will also introduce the Five Elan Design Foundations of Neuroaesthetic Design, a practical framework she developed to help bridge neuroaesthetic concepts with interior design practice.
From Neuroaesthetics to Interior Design
Much of the discussion around neuroaesthetics begins with research. Eryn's work focuses on what happens next.
Through her luxury residential design practice, she considers how concepts from neuroaesthetics can inform decisions involving: light · art · color · materiality · biophilia · spatial organization · sensory experience · personal preference
Her goal is not to turn interior designers into neuroscientists. It is to give designers another perspective for understanding why certain design decisions matter to the people experiencing the space.
The science is valuable, but the practical challenge is translating it into floor plans, lighting, color, art, materials, and the experience of home.
