Intro to Neuroaesthetics — Kravet, Washington DC

September 10, 2026 · 10am-11am Kravet Showroom Washington DC

Eryn Oruncak, SIDC, ASID, Founder and Principal Designer of Elan Design, joined Washington, DC-area interior designers at Breakfast with Kravet on September 10, 2026 for a presentation on Intro to Neuroaesthetics.

Held at the Kravet showroom in Washington, DC, the gathering brought designers together for conversation, education, and an introduction to how neuroaesthetics can add another perspective to the way interior environments are understood and designed.

Interior designers already work with many of the elements that shape the experience of a space: light, color, art, material, pattern, nature, proportion, layout, and personal meaning.

Neuroaesthetics provides another lens through which to consider those decisions.

Introducing Neuroaesthetics to Interior Designers

During the presentation, Eryn introduced designers to the relationship between neuroaesthetics and the built environment, including how perception, emotion, attention, sensory experience, and individual preference can influence the way people respond to the spaces around them.

Rather than treating neuroaesthetics as a formula for creating a particular type of room, the conversation focused on understanding the individual experiencing the environment.

What feels restorative, engaging, comfortable, or meaningful to one person may be experienced very differently by another.

That distinction is central to Elan Design's approach to neuroaesthetic interior design.

Color, Texture and Material Preference

Because the presentation took place at Kravet, Eryn was able to connect neuroaesthetic concepts directly to materials interior designers work with every day.

Fabrics and wallcoverings are not simply decorative finishes. Their color, texture, pattern, scale, visual complexity, and tactile qualities all contribute to how a person experiences a room.

Eryn discussed how one client may be drawn to a richly textured textile, saturated color, or expressive pattern, while another may prefer something quieter, softer, or more visually restrained. Those preferences are part of the information a designer can use when creating an environment that feels personal rather than prescribed.

Kravet's extensive collection of fabrics and wallcoverings provided a natural way to demonstrate that idea.

For the presentation, Eryn assembled a tray of some of her favorite Kravet fabrics, using the samples as tangible examples of the differences in color, texture, pattern, and material character that can shape a person's response to an interior.

The exercise reinforced one of the central ideas of the presentation:

The most appropriate material is not simply the one that is beautiful. It is the one that is beautiful and meaningful to the person who will experience it.
